A hum with no movement means the motor is powered but something is stopping the drive. Check whether the door is jammed or the spring is broken: disconnect the operator and lift the door by hand. If it is heavy, the problem is the door. If the door moves freely, the drive wheel, chain or belt may be slipping, or a gear inside the motor head may be stripped. A failed start capacitor or control board can also cause a hum. Stop pressing the remote, as repeated attempts can burn the motor.

Usually yes, provided the handset type matches the radio system of the receiver. Sommer receivers learn handsets, so the new one has to be taught in while the old one is removed from memory if you are worried about security. Bring a working handset or the model number of the operator and we will check what fits before ordering. If the receiver is an older type with no spare memory, we will tell you whether a replacement receiver is the sensible fix.

A gate that stops and reverses is reacting to an obstacle signal. Look for a blocked photocell, a bent bracket, grit in the sliding track or a swing gate that has sagged and catches the ground. If the path is clear, the force setting may be too low for a gate that has become stiffer, or the end stop may be set in the wrong place. Do not simply raise the force, as that removes the protection that stops the gate pressing on a person or a car. Have it inspected.

Park cars away from the door or gate, keep the area around the opening clear and have all remotes and wall controls available so we can test each one. If you know the model number on the motor head, note it down. Tell us about any recent faults, such as slow travel, noise, or a door that reverses, and when they started. If the door was recently serviced or the springs were changed, mention it, because that affects the travel settings we check.

A swing door pushes open into the room or the street and needs clear space on the swing side.
