Why will my garage door not close, and what can I check?

A garage door that will not close or reverses is usually blocked or misaligned at the safety sensors. Check the sensors and the path first.

  • Clean and align the safety sensors.
  • Clear the door path.
  • Try the wall button and a new remote battery.
  • Note whether the door stops at the same point each time.
  • Send us the door type, motor brand and a photo.

A garage door that will not close, or closes and then reverses, is most often stopped by its safety system. Check these first.

  • Safety sensors. The two small sensors near the floor on either side must face each other and be clean. If one is knocked or dirty the door reverses.
  • The path. Look for anything on the floor or a rail that blocks the door.
  • The remote and the wall button. If the wall button works and the remote does not, replace the remote battery.
  • The same point each time. A door that stops at the same height may have a travel limit that has moved, or a worn spring or roller.

Do not try to adjust the springs yourself: they are under tension. Send us the door type, the motor brand and a photo, and we book a free site visit in Ajman, Sharjah or Dubai and send a written quote. See garage door repair.
