Automatic Gate Installation Cost in UAE: What Sets the Price

By 7 min read

The cost of an automatic gate in the UAE depends on whether you are automating an existing gate or building a new one, the gate type, its weight and width, the motor's duty rating, the safety devices, access control and the civil work. Automating a sound existing gate costs least. A site visit gives the exact figure.

  • Automating an existing gate and building a new automatic gate are two different jobs with different budgets.
  • Gate weight, width and daily openings decide the motor, and the motor is the biggest single item.
  • Photocells, safety edges and a flashing lamp are part of a proper job, not extras.
  • Foundations, cable trenches and finishing can cost more than people expect.
  • Compare quotes line by line, not by the bottom number.

Short answer: the price of an automatic gate depends on six things: whether the gate already exists, the type (sliding or swing), its size and weight, how many times a day it will open, the safety and access control fitted, and the civil work around it. Automating a sound existing gate is the cheapest route. A new fabricated gate with a motor, foundations and access control is the most expensive. Nobody can give an honest exact figure without seeing the opening, which is why we measure first.

We are asked for a price on almost every call. The honest problem is that two gates that look the same from the street can need completely different motors, foundations and safety gear. A villa in Al Rashidiya with a light aluminium swing gate and a warehouse yard in Al Jurf with a six metre steel sliding gate are not the same job. This guide explains what moves the number so you can read any quote, ours included, with open eyes.

Two different jobs that get the same name

Automating a gate you already have

The gate stays. We fit a motor, a control board, photocells, a lamp and remotes. The work is mostly mechanical checking and electrical. Before we quote, we check that the gate runs freely by hand. A gate that sticks, drags or has worn rollers will wear out any motor, so the repair of the gate itself goes into the quote.

A new gate with automation

Here we also fabricate the gate, set foundations or a track, build or adjust pillars and run cable. Steel, finish and labour for the gate usually outweigh the motor. This job takes longer because of fabrication, curing of concrete and finishing, so plan weeks rather than a single day.

The motor is a duty question, not a size question

Motors are sold by the weight of gate they can move, but the number that decides whether a motor lasts is its duty rating: how many openings a day and how many in a row it can take before it overheats. A family that opens the gate eight times a day and a small office with deliveries and staff arriving at once have very different needs, even with the same gate.

In UAE summer a motor housing in direct sun gets hot before it has moved the gate once. Light-duty motors on busy gates often fail through thermal cut-outs and burnt boards, not through mechanical wear. We usually advise one rating up from the minimum for gates that face the sun or serve more than one household. You can see the brands we supply and service on our pages for CAME, BFT, Nice, FAAC and Beninca, and the motors themselves under gate motors.

Sliding or swing: how the choice changes the bill

Sliding gates need a clear run beside the opening roughly equal to the gate width, a track or a cantilever frame and a motor base. Swing gates need strong pillars, good hinges and room for the leaves to open, and the motors are usually fitted in pairs on double leaf gates. Neither is always cheaper. A sliding gate on a good wall can be simple, while a swing gate on sound pillars can be the cheaper automation. If you are still deciding, read our guide to choosing an automatic gate in Ajman, then look at automatic sliding gates and automatic swing gates.

Safety gear is part of the price, not an upgrade

A gate is a heavy moving object next to a road and a front door. A proper installation includes photocells across the opening, a safety edge or force limiting on the leading edge, a flashing lamp and a manual release for power cuts. European standards EN 12453 and EN 12445 are the reference many installers test against: the gate must stop and reverse on meeting an obstruction, and the impact force is measured at handover.

When one quote is noticeably lower than the others, check whether photocells and a lamp are on it. Removing them is the quickest way to cut a price. It is also the quickest way to end up with a gate that crushes a bumper or a child's hand. Our photocell safety sensors page lists what we fit.

Access control and remotes

Every gate needs at least a remote. Beyond that the cost depends on how you want people in:

Adding these at installation is cheaper than retrofitting them later because the cable and the board are already open.

Civil work is where budgets slip

People budget for the motor and forget the ground. Sliding gates need a stable base for the motor and a clean track. Swing gates need pillars that do not move. Cables need a trench or conduit, and in a tiled or paved driveway that means cutting and making good. In Ajman and coastal Sharjah, soil near the sea is often soft or salty and fixings rust faster, so we specify galvanised or stainless parts and good concrete. Ask who is responsible for the civil work and whether it is in the quote.

How to compare two quotes

  1. Check the motor model and its rated gate weight and duty cycle, not just the brand.
  2. Confirm photocells, safety edge or force limiting, flashing lamp and manual release are listed.
  3. Confirm how many remotes are included and who programs spare ones.
  4. Ask who does the civil work, trenching and making good.
  5. Ask about corrosion protection of the gate and fixings if you are near the coast.
  6. Ask what the warranty covers, for how long, and whether it covers labour.
  7. Ask how fast a technician reaches you in an emergency in your area.

What happens on the site visit

The technician measures the opening, checks that an existing gate moves freely, looks at the wall, ground and power point, and asks how many openings a day you expect and who will use it. We take photos for the quote. You can speed this up by sending us a photo and the opening width and height before we come. If you are in Al Nuaimiya, Muwaileh or Sajaa, we schedule visits quickly. Dubai and Abu Dhabi jobs are scheduled by appointment.

You can read how installation works on our sliding gate installation and swing gate installation pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can you give me a price over the phone?

We can tell you which factors apply and what is likely to be involved. A fixed price needs the width, weight, type of gate, and the power and ground, so the final figure comes after the visit.

Is it cheaper to automate my existing gate?

Usually yes, if the gate is straight, runs freely by hand and the structure is sound. If it is rusted, out of true or too heavy for any normal motor, repairing or replacing the gate is part of the real cost.

Do I need a motor with battery backup?

Not on every job. All our motors have a manual release for a power cut. Battery backup makes sense for compounds, clinics and any gate that must open during an outage.

How long does installation take?

Automating an existing gate is often a one-day job. A new gate takes longer because of fabrication, foundations and finishing, and we give the programme in the quote.

Why is one quote much lower than the rest?

Check the motor rating, safety devices, civil work and warranty. The gap usually sits in one of those lines.
