How do I tell which door I have in 30 seconds?

1. Look at the curtain. Metal slats or a flexible sheet?
2. Look at the sides. A deep channel holding rigid slats, or a slim frame with a zip or edge seal?
3. Look above. A shutter box or hood, with a barrel and perhaps a visible motor, or a neat top cover with a control box?
4. Time it. A shutter takes some time to travel. A rapid roller door normally moves in a few seconds.
5. Find the nameplate on the motor or control box and photograph it. It carries the make and model a technician needs.

The 10 minute safe walk-around

This checks what you can see from the ground, and gives the technician a better description.

1. Confirm the isolator or breaker is on and the remote has a fresh battery. A dead remote battery is common after a hot summer.
2. With the shutter stopped, look at both side guides from the ground. Note any dent, gap, or slat edge out of the channel.
3. Look along the curtain for bent or twisted slats and any that look lighter or darker from rust.
4. Look at the bottom bar. Is it level and clear of the floor, with no debris under it?
5. Look at the floor beside each guide for sand, gravel or a build up of dirt.
6. Listen as it moves, once, with nobody under it. Note scraping, banging or hum, and where in the travel it happens.
7. Photograph the nameplate, the box, any damage and a short video of the fault.

Stop and call a technician

• The curtain has dropped on its own, or sags on one side.
• You can hear the motor but nothing moves, or you smell burning.
• Any slat or the bottom bar is hanging loose.
• You would need a ladder, to remove a cover, or to touch a spring, barrel or wiring.
• The shutter is across an escape route, a loading bay with traffic or a fire door line.

Springs hold stored energy. Do not release or adjust one yourself. Do not stand under a curtain you are testing.

Rapid roller and high speed door faults

A rapid roller door is a different machine. A flexible curtain is held in side guides and opens at speed, driven by a controller and triggered by radar, loop, pull cord or a remote. It takes a lot of cycles a day, so the faults tend to be at the edges: the curtain, the guides and the sensors.

• Curtain out of the guide. After a forklift hit, many doors are built so the curtain can release from the guide and be reset. Do not push it back in by hand. See curtain out of guide, reset.
• Door reverses or will not close. A dirty photocell, a light curtain blocked by a cobweb, or a loop that no longer reads. Wipe the lens with a soft cloth. If it persists, call.

• Control box error light. Photograph it. The light pattern tells the technician the fault family.

Field note: the cause we find first on a "faulty" rapid door is a dirty or knocked sensor, not a failed controller. Dust on a lens is cheaper to wipe than a board is to replace.

What does a roller shutter repair visit involve?

1. Safety first. The technician isolates power and keeps the area clear.
2. Test. Run the door and note where and how it fails.
3. Inspect. Curtain, bottom bar, guides, barrel, bearings, springs where fitted, motor, limits and controls.
4. Repair or quote. Small items such as limits, a remote, a switch or a capacitor are often done on the day if the part is on the van. Slats, springs, motors and guides may need ordering.

• If the damage is a few bent slats near the bottom and the guides are straight, then repair.

Worked example (illustration, not a QNAD job)

A store shutter 5.0 m wide and 4.0 m high drags on the left side. Inspection finds a guide pushed in by 12 mm over the lowest 600 mm, and three slats bent near the bottom bar. The upper 3.4 m of curtain and guides are straight, and the motor runs without noise. That is a local repair: straighten or replace the lower guide section, swap the three slats, reset the limits. If instead the bent slats ran the full 4.0 m on both sides, with rust at the edges, the guides could no longer hold the curtain true, and replacing the curtain and guides together would make more sense.
